The Dark Truth of Why We Should Abolish Daylight Savings Time

Daylight saving time (DST) has been a long-standing practice in many countries, including the United States. It's a system where clocks are moved forward in the spring and backward in the fall, supposedly to make better use of daylight during the summer months. However, the origins of DST are murky and its effectiveness is questionable, leading many libertarians to call for its abolition. In this blog post, we'll explore the top 5 reasons why DST should be abolished from a libertarian perspective.

As a libertarian, I believe that individual freedom and limited government intervention are key principles for a prosperous society. With that in mind, here are the top 5 reasons why we should abolish daylight savings time:

  1. It violates the principle of individual liberty

Daylight savings time forces everyone to adjust their clocks and schedules twice a year, whether they want to or not. This is a clear violation of individual liberty, as it takes away our freedom to manage our own time and schedules as we see fit.

  1. It disrupts the free market

Daylight savings time disrupts the free market by artificially changing the amount of daylight hours. This can lead to confusion and inefficiency in business transactions, especially for those involved in international trade.

  1. It creates unnecessary government bureaucracy

The government's involvement in setting and enforcing daylight savings time creates unnecessary bureaucracy and red tape. This is a waste of taxpayer resources and a burden on businesses and individuals alike.

  1. It has negative effects on public health

Research has shown that the abrupt change in sleep schedules caused by daylight savings time can have negative effects on public health, including increased rates of heart attacks, strokes, and car accidents. This is a clear example of government intervention causing unintended harm.

  1. It serves no practical purpose

Finally, the most compelling reason to abolish daylight savings time is that it serves no practical purpose. The idea was originally proposed as a way to save energy, but studies have shown that the savings are negligible, if not non-existent. In fact, many argue that daylight savings time actually increases energy usage by extending the use of air conditioning and lighting into the evening hours.

In conclusion, as a libertarian, I believe that the government should not be in the business of telling us when to adjust our clocks and schedules. By abolishing daylight savings time, we can restore individual liberty, support the free market, reduce government bureaucracy, improve public health, and eliminate an unnecessary and ineffective government intervention.

I agree I hate daylight savings time and I have ever since I was a child and we had to go to bed while the sun was still up. I also hate it when our legislature tries to pass this through by changing terms. Wanting to rename Savings time to standard time and then making the new standard permanent. Called Viet my rep and he said “I don’t mind getting up when it is dark.” So he was no help.
